Washington D.C. was created as a capital district in 1790 and, as such, it does not belong to a US state, but rather falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the US Congress. Washington has a population of nearly 650,000 and serves as the nation’s capital. Thus, if you’re interested in American politics, this is the place to be, as all three branches of the federal government can be found here. Plus, the city is home to 176 foreign embassies, international institutions and organisations, as well as numerous national monuments and museums, including the Lincoln Memorial, for instance. The city has much more to offer than politics, though, including its vibrant gay scene.

The National Mall is the perfect place to start, as it represents the heart of America. Here you will find the Smithsonian, which features nineteen free museums, as well as the National Gallery of Art; the National Museum of Natural History; the National Museum of American History; the National Museum of the American Indian; the National Air and Space Museum; Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden; the Arts & Industries Building; and the Smithsonian Castle amongst others. There are numerous memorials and monuments in the area, as well, such as the Washington Monument; the National World War II Memorial; the Declaration of Independence Memorial; the D.C. War Memorial.; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; the Korean War Veterans Memorial; the Lincoln Memorial; the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial; the FDR Memorial; the Jefferson Memorial; and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

On a trip to Capitol Hill you can visit the Capitol Building; the Library of Congress; the Supreme Court; and see the Statue of Freedom; the Peace Monument; and the Ulysses S Grant Memorial. There are also numerous festivals held in Washington D.C. such as the National Cherry Blossom Festival; the National Kite Festival; Shakespeare Free for All; and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

If you’re interested in sampling the nightlife of Washington, Dupont Circle and Logan Circle are where you will find the majority of gay bars and clubs. Plus, there are gay-oriented events, such as Capital Pride and Reel Affirmations, a LGBT Film Festival.
