New York Gay Guide / LGBT Guide
New York City, nicknamed ‘The Big Apple’, is an extremely popular tourist destination, since there is much to see and do there. It is, after all, a global city with immense cultural and economic influence throughout the world and is readily identifiable through notable iconic buildings and images, such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. It is not surprising that in such a city there is a diverse mixture of people and that there is a substantial gay presence. Consequently, there are plenty of activities and events targeted specifically at the gay community.
The New York AIDS walk is an annual event that aims to generate money and raise awareness of a condition that has affected so many gay men. There are also a number of pride events held throughout different neighbourhoods in the city. New York City Pride, also referred to as Heritage of Pride, attracts a huge crowd and combines a number of events to raise awareness of issues affecting the LGBT community, with a rally and a march. There is much fun to be had with the other activities on offer, including the ‘Dance on the Pier’. This Pride March has historical significance, having first taken place in 1970, making it the longest-running LGBT pride parade.
You can also enjoy the Folsom Street Fair, where there are stalls and various forms of entertainment, and see what’s going on in the world of gay cinema with MIX NYC. There are quite a number of well-known gay villages in the city, from Greenwich Village to Chelsea, with the former particularly famous for its place in gay history, as it is where the Stonewall riots took place in 1969, paving way for the gay liberation movement. There is no shortage of gay bars, clubs, saunas and gay-friendly establishments throughout New York City.
Plus, there are the usual tourist attractions to see, including the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Rockefeller Center and the Statue of Liberty.
The only trouble is finding the time to experience all that NYC has to offer.
