It comes as no surprise that Liverpool was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture in 2008, since the city has long been a breeding ground for cultural creativity and innovation. As a port city it has played an important role in the UK economy, especially when the British Empire was at its peak, and it is home to a diverse population. This diversity and creativity is reflected in the city’s architecture, its music, literature and attitude. There are plenty of museums and other cultural institutions where you can experience everything that Liverpool has to offer.
Liverpool is the third most popular tourist city in Britain and statistically is one of the safest cities in the country to live in It was recently voted both the friendliest city in the UK for the second year running and the fourth friendliest city in the world.
There are numerous iconic buildings and locations in the city that are worth seeking out including: the Royal Liver Building; St. George's Hall; Albert Dock; Liverpool Cathedral; Liverpool Town Hall; Princes Road Synagogue; Williamson's Tunnels; Speke Hall; Canada Boulevard; and Pier Head. There are also plenty of museums and galleries where you can learn more about the city’s history, such as: the World Museum Liverpool; Walker Art Gallery; the Bluecoat; Merseyside Maritime Museum; the International Slavery Museum; Tate Liverpool; the Beatles Story; and the Victoria Gallery & Museum. You can also take guided tours of the city, such as the Magical Mystery Tour; attend the theatre; or watch a football match.
If you’re interested in checking out Liverpool’s vibrant nightlife, you may want to head over to Liverpool’s Gay Quarter, which is the first and only official gay quarter in the UK. In this pedestrianised area of the city, you will find lots of gay nightclubs and bars, as well as other gay-friendly venues. Liverpool Pride also takes place in the Gay Quarter, attracting large crowds with its parade and other festivities. Homotopia, an international LGBT arts festival, is also a popular event that takes place in the city, as is the Outsiders LGBT Film Festival.
Liverpool is definitely a city worth visiting, as whether you’re interested in learning about its history and culture or simply socialising, shopping and drinking, this city has a little bit of everything.
