Cardiff is the largest city in Wales, with a population of over 346,000, and has served as capital of the country since 1955. A lot of money has been invested into redeveloping Cardiff since the 1990s, particularly the Cardiff Bay area and the city centre. Cardiff is also home to a number of sporting venues, such as the Millennium Stadium, and is one of the largest media centres in the UK. There are numerous landmarks worth visiting, including the five different castles that lie within the vicinity of Cardiff. The city is also recognised as a top shopping destination, whilst it also has the reputation of being a green city, with plenty of open space to enjoy.
There are a number of different landmarks and institutions worth paying a visit to, including Cardiff Castle; the Millennium Stadium, which hosts football and rugby matches; the Wales Millennium Stadium, a futuristic building where opera, dance, and musicals are performed; the National Assembly for Wales, also referred to as the Senedd; Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre; City Hall; the Norwegian Church; the Pierhead building; Llandaff Cathedral; Beaupre Castle; Caerau Castle Ringwork; Castell Coch, which means ‘Red Castle’ in Welsh; Penmark Castle; and Bute Park. You can also pay a visit to St Fagans National History Museum and the National Museum Cardiff in order to learn more about Cardiff’s history.
There is the option to relax in Bute Park or explore the Cardiff Bay area, where there are plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants where you can have something to eat and drink. If you’re interested in sampling Cardiff’s nightlife, you will find that there are many gay clubs and bars in the city. Plus, there are a number of gay-themed events held annually, including Cardiff Mardi Gras that takes place in September; the Cardiff Lesbian and Gay Ball that takes place in May; and Mr Gay Wales, a gay male beauty pageant. Cardiff is a friendly place with plenty to see and do so that you will never have a dull moment during your stay.
