Glasgow is a city of "gallus" charm and legendary hospitality. With a population of just under 600,000, Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and the UK’s third largest. While Edinburgh has the history, Glasgow has the heart—and one of the most down-to-earth gay scenes in the UK. Centred primarily in the stylish Merchant City district, the scene is compact, making it easy to hop between traditional pubs and modern lounges. For the mature gay man, Glasgow offers a welcoming, "come as you are" atmosphere that prioritises good conversation and a warm welcome over trendy elitism.

The Merchant City: Glasgow’s Gay Hub

The "Merchant City" is the historic core of Glasgow’s queer life. Unlike other cities, Glasgow’s venues are often tucked into stunning Victorian architecture.

  • The Waterloo Bar: (Caffmos Top Pick) A legendary institution. As Glasgow’s oldest gay bar, it is the spiritual home for the mature community. It’s unpretentious, friendly, and always packed with locals who have stories to tell.
  • Katie’s Bar: Located in a basement on Glassford Street, Katie’s is a firm favourite for the "silver" crowd and their admirers. It offers great food during the day and a lively, safe atmosphere at night.
  • The Underground: A popular spot for the bear community and older guys. It’s famous for its Sunday afternoon karaoke and relaxed weekend vibes.
  • Delmonicas: "Dels" is a Merchant City staple. It’s a bit more high-energy with a great mix of ages, perfect for a mid-week cocktail or a weekend party.
  • Polo Lounge: If you’re looking to dance the night away, Polo is Glasgow’s premier gay club, located in a magnificent converted bank. It has multiple rooms, often featuring 80s and 90s classics that appeal to all generations.
