With a population of just under 600,000, Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and the UK’s third largest. Glasgow has an important place in Scottish history, having been at the heart of the Scottish Enlightenment and becoming an important industrial hub that led to Glasgow being dubbed the ‘second city of the British Empire.’ Although ship building and other industries are less prominent in the city today, Glasgow remains one of the UK’s most important economic centres. You can also sample Glaswegian culture if you choose to visit the many museums in the city and enjoy the activities and events that are held there each year.

When it comes to museums and art galleries, you are pretty much spoiled for choice. Some of the most popular establishments to visit include: the Gallery of Modern Art; the Glasgow Science Centre; the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery; the Glasgow Police Museum; the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum; the Old Govan Church and Govan Stones; the People's Palace and Winter Gardens; the Riverside Museum; St. Mungo's Museum of Religious Life and Art; and Tenement House. Glasgow is also famous for its music scene and there are plenty of clubs to visit, such as: Nice 'n' Sleazy, the Barrowland Ballroom; The Riverside Club; The Arches; and the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre.

There are also a number of festivals held in the city that include the Glasgow International Jazz Festival; the West End Festival and the Merchant City Festival, as well as comedy clubs such as Jongleurs and the Stand. The city will keep you just as busy at night as it does during the day, as Glasgow has a vibrant nightlife. If you’re interested in exploring the gay scene, it is worth heading to Merchant City, as this is home to the gay clubs and bars in the city, and it also has plenty of fashionable shops and cafés.

Glasgow has a couple of high-profile gay-related events, as well, which include the Glasgay Festival which is a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender arts festival. Plus, there is also Pride Glasgow where the gay community comes together to party and draw attention to LGBT issues. Overall, then, Glasgow is an exciting city to visit and certainly has plenty to keep you occupied during your stay.
