With a population of approximately 512,000 inhabitants, Manchester is one of the UK’s largest cities and is regarded by many people as the capital of the north of England. Manchester has a distinctive culture which has filtered into its architecture, music, art and literature. The city also has an important role as far as science and engineering in the UK go, with two universities located in the city, whilst it has the country’s third largest urban economy. Sport is also an important feature of the city, with Manchester City and Manchester United garnering an international following of football fans. There is plenty to do in the city, so it is little wonder that it is such a popular city to visit.

If you’re interested in checking out what Manchester has to offer at night, Canal Street is the place to head, as this is where the majority of gay bars, clubs, restaurants and cafés can be found. There is a friendly atmosphere in this long-established gay village and no shortage of things to do. It is in this area of the city where the main festivities associated with Manchester Pride take place. Although the gay parade can be enjoyed for free, the rest of the events take place within a gated area and to gain access you are required to wear a paid-for wristband. Manchester has much to see and do, making it one UK city well worth paying a visit to.

To sample some of Manchester’s culture, you may want to try visiting some of the following attractions: the Imperial War Museum North; Manchester Art Gallery; Manchester Museum; the Gallery of English Costume; the Museum of Science and Industry; the People's History Museum; Bridgewater Hall; the Manchester Jewish Museum; Castlefield; Manchester Cathedral; and Manchester Town Hall. You can also check out the theatres in the city, including Contact; visit the two football stadiums in the city; or watch cricket. There is also plenty of shopping to be done, whether you decide to explore the Northern Quarter area of the city or visit the out-of-town Trafford Centre.
