Edmonton Gay Guide / LGBT Guide
Known as ‘The Festival City’, due to the large number of festivals that take place throughout the year, Edmonton is the ideal city to visit if you’re interested in exploring Canadian culture. As the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, you will find that there are plenty of cultural activities and events to enjoy. Plus, since Edmonton is based along the North Saskatchewan River there are also some spectacular sights to see and you will be able to appreciate the natural beauty of the area by walking or cycling along the many trails and parks that are scattered throughout the city.
Although the gay scene is somewhat small and limited in Edmonton, you will still find that there is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. There are a number of gay bars in the city and an exciting nightlife to enjoy. Plus, there is the annual Edmonton Pride Festival, where you can enjoy the Pride Parade and all the festivities that are on offer to celebrate the contribution of the gay community to Canadian society. Although there may not be too many specifically gay-oriented events, there are certainly many other festivals and opportunities to take in some Canadian culture, from museums and art galleries to live music and theatre. The main "gay village" in Edmonton can be found on Jasper Avenue.
Some of the institutions that attract a significant number of visitors include the Royal Alberta Museum, the TELUS World of Science, the Muttart Conservatory and the Art Gallery of Alberta, whilst tours of the Alberta Legislature are also popular. If you’re interested in plays and music, there are a range of theatres that put on productions, including Winspear, the Citadel Theatre, the Jubilee Auditorium, Jubilation's and the Mayfield. As already mentioned, Edmonton plays host to a large number of festivals throughout the year, such as the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, Symphony Under the Sky, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and A Taste of Edmonton.
Edmonton is also a great city to visit if you’re an active person, as walking, cycling and cross-country skiing are all popular activities. Thus, whatever your interests are, Edmonton should have something to keep you busy!
