Halifax Gay Guide / LGBT Guide
As capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax has a population of nearly 413,000 people and is home to a significant number of important government departments and private companies, making it a major economic and cultural centre of eastern Canada. The city contains some impressive architecture and there are numerous museums and cultural artefacts to view during your stay. You could decide to explore the parks in the area, go for a hike along one of the hiking trails or take a tour of the harbour. There are also a number of cultural events held annually, including Halifax Pride Week, thus meaning that there is plenty to keep you occupied.
If you want to learn more about the history of Halifax, you may want to check out the Halifax Citadel, which not only gives you the perfect view of Halifax Harbour; it also has re-enactments and a museum to enjoy. Pier 21, which has been renamed the National Immigration Museum, is also worth a visit, as it gives you an opportunity to learn more about the immigrant experience; as is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which features exhibits and artefacts that relate to the sinking of the Titanic and the Halifax Explosion that took place in 1917; and the Old Burial Grounds that were in use from 1749 to 1843.
If you want to explore the greenery, there are a variety of parks to walk through, including the Public Gardens; Point Pleasant Park; and Halifax Common. You may decide to explore the waterfront, where there are a variety of historic buildings; take a boat tour or go canoeing; or take a ferry trip to Dartmouth. There are also events held in the city, such as the Busker Festival; the Nova Scotia International Air Show; and the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. The city is open and welcoming, with plenty of gay-friendly venues, as well as its own Pride Week, where there are all sorts of events aimed at the LGBT community. Overall, Halifax is well worth a visit.
