With a population of approximately 809,000 inhabitants in the administrative centre, Valencia is the third largest city in Spain and is situated along the banks of the Turia River. It has a rich, diverse history having been founded in 138 BC as a Roman colony. There are numerous sites of historical importance, including the Llotja de la Seda, a gothic style building which was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1996. Valencia is a popular tourist destination for its culture, good weather and stunning sights. The city is also largely gay-friendly and contains a gay village where there is a large concentration of gay establishments.

If you want to learn more about Valencian history and culture, it might be wise to check out some of the many museums, art galleries and impressive architecture which you can find throughout the city. As already mentioned, the La Lonja de la Seda, also known as the Silk Exchange, is a popular tourist site; the Valencia Cathedral is also another mostly gothic building worth visiting and features doors from three different architectural periods; in the City of Arts and Science you will discover a Science Museum, a Planetarium and an Aquarium, as well as an IMAX cinema; you could also take a trip to the Lladró Porcelain Museum and Factory, whilst the Valencian History Museum is another popular draw.

You could also take a stroll through the city, with the Barri del Carme showcasing old and new Valencia and providing you with an opportunity to enjoy its outdoor cafés and independent shops. Taking a walk along the old Turia river bed is another popular option, as it is now a park where you can enjoy walking, cycling or some other form of physical activity. Plus, there are several beaches located in Valencia, so you can enjoy the beach atmosphere and work on getting a tan without leaving the city.

At night, you can also enjoy the clubs and bars located in the city, including those which are targeted at those within the gay community. Plus, Valencia has its own Gay Pride festival which is held every June. Consequently, a trip to Valencia is hardly likely to be dull!
