Travel Tips for Mature Gay Men in Spain

Is Spain Safe? Spain consistently ranks as one of the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers. Public displays of affection are widely accepted in major cities.

When to Visit: For smaller crowds and milder weather, late spring (May/June) and early autumn (September/October) are ideal for exploring the Spanish coast.

Local Etiquette: Dinner in Spain starts late (usually after 9 PM). Use this time to enjoy a Paseo (evening stroll) through the local gayborhood.

Gay Rights

Although the Catholic Church continues to have a dominant place within Spanish society, this has done little to prevent most Spaniards taking a liberal attitude towards gay relationships, at least since homosexuality was decriminalised in 1979. Indeed, in 2005 Spain became the third country in the world to legalise gay marriage, after the Netherlands and Belgium, whilst same-sex couples were also given the right to adopt children. It is therefore not exactly surprising to learn that Spain has a thriving gay scene, with plenty of pubs, clubs, societies and events that are specifically targeted at the gay community.
