Calgary Gay Guide / LGBT Guide
Located along the Bow River in Alberta and towards the east of the Canadian Rockies, Calgary is a city with a population of over one million inhabitants and an economy that is centred largely on the petroleum industry and agriculture. There are plenty of impressive sights to see from the stunning architecture of the city’s skyscrapers to the natural beauty of the prairie land and foothills in the area. You can visit the city’s numerous museums, art galleries and historical artefacts or, if you prefer, get active by going for a bike ride in this cycle-friendly city or by visiting Canada Olympic Park, where you can try skiing for yourself. Calgary is a city that has something for everyone.
If you’re interested in discovering more about the city’s heritage, there are a variety of museums and other establishments to choose from. You may wish to pay a visit to Glenbow Museum, where the emphasis is on local history; Fort Calgary Historic Park, with the fort being the city’s oldest historic monument; the Military Museums, where you can learn more about the military history of Canada; and Heritage Park, which is a living historical village where you can see a number of exhibits. You may also decide to pay a trip to Calgary Tower; go for a stroll along Stephen Avenue Walk; visit Chinatown, the Calgary Science Centre, Inglewood Bird Sanctuary & Nature Centre, and Prince's Island Park.
It is easy to keep active in Calgary, whether you choose to walk, cycle, run, or rollerblade through the city or whether you prefer to try water sports, such as sailing, kayaking, and canoeing, which are available to do at Glenmore Reservoir. The city is also gay-friendly and so you should feel at home whatever your sexuality. Calgary Pride is held annually towards the end of August and the city also hosts its own gay film festival, Fairy Tales International Queer Film Festival.
