With a population of about 1.9 million, Perth is the largest city in Western Australia and serves as the capital city of the state. Captain James Stirling founded Perth in 1829 and it was granted city status in 1856. Migration to the area took off in the nineteenth century due to the Australian gold rushes in this period. Immigrants were also attracted to the area following the conclusion of World War Two and later by the mining booms of the late twentieth century. There are plenty of cultural activities to keep you busy in Perth and lots of sights to see. You can also enjoy eating, drinking and socialising in the restaurants, pubs and clubs that are located throughout the city.

If you want to get a taste of Perth’s culture, you might want to pay a visit to the Perth Cultural Centre, where you will find the Western Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. The city is also home to the Maritime Museum; Fremantle Prison, which was constructed in 1850; Round House, which was built in the 1830s as a prison and, today, serves as a museum; the Old Mill, which is the oldest surviving industrial building, having been built in 1835. You can also enjoy music in Perth, as there are plenty of music venues to choose from, as well as music festivals, such as The Big Day Out, which are extremely popular.

The Perth International Arts Festival and the Perth Pride Festival are two other cultural events, which attract large crowds. However, Perth has more to offer than just culture. It is the ideal city to be in if you’re interested in keeping active, as you can go cycling along the many cycle paths or walk through the numerous parks, such as Kings Park, Bold Park, and Lake Monga. You can also go swimming in the ocean or enjoy the other water-based activities that are available. You may even prefer to go shopping or to look at kangaroos. Whatever you’re looking for from your holiday, Perth is bound to have it!
