Brisbane Gay Guide 2026: A Guide to the River City
Brisbane (or "Brissie") has a queer scene that is welcoming and remarkably relaxed. While Sydney has the glitz, Brisbane offers a more authentic, community-focused experience—making it a favorite for mature gay travelers and those who appreciate life at a slower pace. With a population of about 2.2 million, Brisbane is the most populous city in Queensland and serves as the state’s capital. Brisbane is situated along Brisbane River, which was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, who had been the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. It was only after Queensland became a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859 that Brisbane was nominated as capital. The city is popular amongst tourists for its warm climate, stunning scenery and welcoming locals.
