Darwin Gay Guide / LGBT Guide
Darwin serves as capital of the sparsely-populated Northern Territory and has a population of just over 129,000. Despite being a relatively small city, it is one of Australia’s most modern cities, having been rebuilt following World War Two, and again after Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Darwin is a cosmopolitan city that had embraced people from all different backgrounds, and being so close to South-East Asia means that the city is an important gateway to Indonesia amongst others. In Darwin you will find there are plenty of cultural events to enjoy and historical artefacts to see, as well as activities to do.
If you’re interested in history and culture in Darwin, you could pay a visit to one of the many museums and cultural establishments that include: Fannie Bay Gaol, which served as Darwin’s main prison for nearly a hundred years from 1883; the Old Court House and Police Station, which were built in 1884 in the old colonial style; the Aviation Heritage Centre, which features a collection of aircraft and displays; Lyons Cottage, which is also known as British Australia Telegraph (BAT) House, a building which escaped destruction in the bombing raids of World War Two and Cyclone Tracy; the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory; World War II Oil Storage Tunnels; and Northern Territory Parliament House.
There are also festivals and activities to enjoy, such as Darwin Festival, which features a wide range of cultural activities from theatre to dance, music to comedy; the Aboriginal Art Awards; Bassinthegrass, a music festival; Darwin Cup Carnival, where you can enjoy all the horse racing action; and the Arafura Games, which is recognised as a week-long celebration of sporting activities and diversity; and Darwin Pride, which offers the gay community an opportunity to celebrate with a parade and festival.
You can also get in touch with nature during your stay in Darwin; whilst being such a young and vibrant city means that the nightlife is also pretty exciting. Darwin is definitely an Australian city worth visiting.
