Turin Gay Guide / LGBT Guide
Turin is a city located in the north of Italy along the Po River and has a population of nearly 912,000 people. The city has a fascinating history which is reflected in the cultural artefacts that can be found there. Turin has long played an important part in Italy’s history and was actually designated as the nation’s first capital in 1861, as well as being home to the House of Savoy, Italy’s royal family. Many notable politicians and people who worked towards Italian unification in the seventeenth century were born in the city and, today, Turin is home to some of Italy’s best universities, colleges and other educational establishments.
Clearly, then, Turin is the ideal city to visit if you are interested in history and culture. You may decide to start off by visiting the museums and art galleries in the area, including the National Cinema Museum; Castello di Rivoli; the Museo dell'Automobile; the Armeria Reale; and the Egyptian Museum. There are also notable landmarks, buildings, and areas of natural beauty worth seeing such as the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist; the Cathedral of Superga; La Venaria Reale, a palace which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Valentino Park; as well as River Po Park.
If you’re interested in shopping, you may want to explore Via Garibaldi, a pedestrianised shopping zone, or take a walk through the Porta Palazzo market, one of the biggest markets in Europe. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars where you can eat, drink and socialise. If you’re interested in socialising with other members of the LGBT community, there are a couple of high-profile gay-oriented events, including Torino Pride and the International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. There are also a number of gay bars scattered throughout the city. Thus, whatever you hope to get from your holiday, Turin is likely to provide it for you.
