In a galaxy far, far away it was R2-D2 of “Star Wars." But in the 1950s it was R2AmNot, when my widowed grandfather and his parrot moved in with us. No longer an engineer with the Panama Canal, he nicknamed me, “R2AmNot.”
Since Wright-Patterson, an Ohio Air Force base, is steeped in decades of UFO theories, and since "Ohio is the Birthplace of Aviation," my husbear and I, both captains for a major airline, had our retirement condo on Lake Erie in Lakewood, the gay suburb of Cleveland. But four years later, he was killed in an automobile accident involving an alcohol-impaired truck driver.
His ashes were scattered over the water, while my single life continues with swimming, hiking trails, ice skating and walleye ice fishing. My indoor energies avoid the elevator to the 7th floor of my condo. Instead I climb the stairs. My collection of books and motion pictures from my ever-expanding visual library find me alone in my La-Z-Boy recliner too many evenings.
But isn't it interesting whom you meet these days? Remember Cole Porter's lyrics? "Well, did you evah! What a swell party this is." So I keep finding every day is a gift of life. And I keep discovering I'm Max and this is my story. Thank you, Jesus!
