With a population of over 620,000 and covering an area of 8,336 km2 Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands. Crete has an important place within Greek heritage, having once been the centre of Minoan civilisation, which is believed to be the earliest European civilisation ever recorded. It is therefore unsurprising that the island’s history continues to influence the identity of modern-day Crete and you will find this reflected in the array of archaeological sites, ruins, museums and art in the area. Even if you’re not interested in culture, there are plenty of beaches where you can relax in the sunshine and restaurants where you can eat, meaning you are unlikely to be bored.

If you do decide you want to sample the island’s heritage you could always visit the ruins of the Minoan Civilisation including the Palace of Knossos; the Palace of Malia; the ruins of Phaistos, Gortys, and Gournia. Plus, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion contains a variety of different historical artefacts. There are a number of other museums in the area such as Chania Archaeological Museum; the Naval Museum of Crete; the Historical and Folk Art Museum; the Lychnostatis Museum in Hersonissos; and the Aghios Nikolaos Archaeological Museum. There are also monasteries scattered across the island which are usually accompanied by a small museum and church.

The island is home to stunning landscapes and beaches and it is well worth exploring the area by bike or car. You may decide you want to take a leisurely stroll along the beaches, explore the many caves on the island or try swimming, surfing, sailing, snorkelling or any of the many other water sports on offer. Plus, you could try horse-riding, as this is a popular activity. Crete also has plenty of restaurants and bars where you can get something to eat and drink, whilst its nightlife is vibrant, so that you can enjoy mingling with other revellers. There isn’t much of a gay scene in Crete, but there is enough to see and do to ensure you have a good time.
