Winnipeg is the capital of the Canadian prairie province of Manitoba and has an ethnically-diverse population with over 663,000 people living in the area. There are a number of cultural organisations located in the city including museums, art galleries and theatres, whilst there are a range of festivals that take place throughout the year and attract large crowds. The gay scene in Winnipeg isn’t exactly huge, as there are only a few gay bars in the city, but the city is very tolerant and welcoming nonetheless and was, in fact, one of the first North American cities to elect an openly gay mayor.
Although there aren't a huge number of gay-orientated events and establishments to choose from, there are a few popular gay bars in the city. In terms of events that cater specifically for the gay community, there is 'Reel Pride', which is a film and video festival produced by the Winnipeg Gay and Lesbian Film Society, showcasing films that represent LGBT experiences. Winnipeg also has its own Pride festival, where you can take part in the annual parade and also enjoy the live entertainment that is on offer, as well as eat, drink and socialise.
Winnipeg is home to lots of museums, including the Manitoba Museum, the Manitoba Electrical Museum, the Costume Museum of Canada, the Airforce Heritage Museum and Air Park and the Fire Fighters Museum of Winnipeg. There are also art galleries, such as the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Graffiti Gallery that are worth paying a visit to. There are also numerous theatres in the city including the Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Pantages Playhouse Theatre and the Prairie Theatre Exchange.
If you're more interested in outdoor pursuits than culture, there are plenty of parks to explore in Winnipeg, such as Assiniboine Park and King's Park, and opportunities to walk, cycle, play golf and enjoy winter sports such as skiing. Winnipeg is a Canadian city with much to do and see, and so you're sure to find something to do during your stay there.
