Vancouver is an ethnically and linguistically diverse city with a population of over 600,000 people that has long been recognised as one of the ‘most liveable’ cities in the world. Located in the West of Canada, weather conditions vary from warm, dry summers to rain throughout the rest of the year, especially between October and March. This may be worth bearing in mind when choosing when to visit this interesting coastal province of British Columbia. There are many areas of outstanding beauty to visit, as well as plenty of outdoors activities to keep you busy, whilst the gay community is also well-catered for.

To experience some gay culture in Vancouver, it is well worth taking a trip to Davie Village, a ‘gaybourhood’ that is based in the West End area of the city. There are plenty of rainbow flags flying, signalling its gay-friendliness, and there are numerous establishments that cater for the gay community. There are lots of gay bars and clubs and, indeed, the area is well-known for its thriving nightlife, whilst you will also find restaurants and hotels, as well as the high-profile gay and lesbian bookstore, ‘Little Sister's Book and Art Emporium’. It is also here that the Davie Street Pride Festival takes place alongside Vancouver’s annual Gay Pride.

Besides the Vancouver Pride Festival there are also a number of other gay-oriented events held throughout the city, including Global Pride, Mr Vancouver Leather, and the Vancouver Queer Film and Video Festival.

In the city there are parks to explore, including Stanley Park, VanDusen Botanical Garden and Queen Elizabeth Park; as well as beaches, including Kits Beach, Spanish Banks, English Bay Beach and Wreck Beach – a popular nude beach. There is also an assortment of cultural events that take place during the year, such as the annual Dragon Boat Festival on False Creek, the HSBC Celebration of Light, Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival and the Fringe Festival. Clearly, then, Vancouver has something for everyone.
