Mexico City is the largest city in Mexico and serves as the nation’s capital. Mexico City has long been at Mexico’s political, administrative, financial and cultural centre from its days as one of Spain’s colonial outposts to modern-day, independent Mexico. Indeed, it is because of Mexico City’s influence that it is recognised as a global city and, due to its size, history and location you will find a never-ending list of things to do in the city. It also has the benefit of being a relatively liberal city, having passed a bill to legalise same-sex marriage in 2009.
If you want to learn more about culture in Mexico City, there is a wide range of museums, art galleries and other institutions to visit. Some of these include: the National Museum of Anthropology; the Museum of Modern Art; the Fine Arts Palace Museum; Universum, which is the science museum of the National Autonomous University of Mexico; the Casa Mural Diego Rivera; the National Palace; Mexico City's Museum; the Templo Mayor Museum, where you can view the ruins from the Aztec empire; and the Frida Kahlo Museum. There are also notable seasonal celebrations, including Independence Day in September and Day of the Dead in November.
There are parks to explore, such as Chapultepec Park and Zoo and Viveros de Coyoacán. You can get active yourself or watch some of the most popular sports in the city, such as football. You will find that the city also has an exciting and vibrant nightlife. The Zona Rosa is a neighbourhood in the city, which has close ties with the gay community and there you will find lots of gay bars, clubs and other gay-friendly establishments. This is also where Mexico City’s Gay Pride parade is held, with members of the LBGT coming together to celebrate. Clearly, then, Mexico City is the ideal holiday destination for its cultural heritage, relaxed atmosphere and range of activities to choose from.
