With a population of over 568,000 people, Malaga is the sixth largest city in Spain. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, having been founded in about 770 BC and there are lots of impressive monuments and archaeological remains from each of the different historical periods, which make the city centre an ‘open museum’. It is therefore not surprising that tourism is so important to Malaga’s economy. The city is a popular destination for those who want to discover more about the area’s heritage, whilst its subtropical-Mediterranean climate and stunning views also contribute to people’s decision to visit.

If you want to discover more about Malaga’s history, you will find yourself spoiled for choice, as there are many sights to see and museums to visit. The Alcazaba is a Moorish castle worth seeing; there is also the Roman Theatre; the Castillo de Gibralfaro; the Malaga Cathedral; Picasso's birthplace; the Picasso Museum; the Museo Carmen Thyssen; the Interactive Museum of Music; the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo; the Plaza de Toros de la Malagueta; La Conception Botanical & Historical Garden; the Museo del Vidrio y el Cristal; the Museo Revello de Toro; the Museo del Cister; the Museo de Artes Populares and the Museo del Vino. All of these will give you an insight into the culture of the city.

Aside from the historical side of Malaga, there are also numerous activities to keep you busy. You could try rock climbing, for instance. Plus, there are beaches where you can sunbathe and relax or do something that requires you to expend a little bit more energy such as walking, surfing, or swimming. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs to choose from as well. There are no bars labelled specifically as ‘gay’ but there is a welcoming atmosphere in general wherever you go. Plus, the city is home to a number of annual events such as the August Malaga Fair and the Malaga Film Festival, so there is always something to do.
