Situated between Paris and Marseille, Lyon is the third largest city in France with a population of over 2.1 million people. Lyon is famous for its historical significance and magnificent architecture, and has long been associated with cinema, due to the cinematographe being invented in the city by Auguste and Louis Lumière. In a country where food has an important cultural role, Lyon is recognised as being the capital of gastronomy. Lyon has also been given the title of the ‘Capital of Lights’ due to the famous light festival which takes place there every December. During a stay in the city you will find that there are many places of cultural importance to visit and activities to enjoy.
If you want to learn more about the city, there are numerous art galleries and museums worth exploring, such as the Musée des Beaux Arts, the Musée d'Art contemporain, the Institut Lumière - Musée vivant du Cinéma, the Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation, the Musée de la Miniature et des Décors de cinema, the Musée des Hospices civils de Lyon and the Musées Gadagne: Historical museum of Lyon and International puppet museum. You can also enjoy listening to classical music and opera at the Auditorium and the Opera House or rock and pop music at Transbordeur or Ninkasi.
If you enjoy the theatre, there are plenty of establishments to choose from including the Théâtre des Célestins, the Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse and the Théâtre Tête d'Or. There are also parks and gardens to explore such as the Parc de la Tête d'Or, the Rhône banks and the Parc de Gerland, as well as plenty of opportunities to shop, eat and drink.
If you want to find gay bars and clubs, it may be worth heading to the Quais de Saône area of the city, as there are plenty of gay-friendly businesses located there. Plus, there is also Gay Pride Lyon, which is held in June to bring the gay community together to have some fun and raise awareness of LGBT issues. Lyon is therefore a French city that is definitely worth visiting.
