With a population of over three million, Lisbon is Portugal’s largest city and serves as the nation’s capital. As a global city, Lisbon is at the heart of finance, media, entertainment, the arts, education and tourism in Portugal. It is also one of the oldest cities in Europe and has many fascinating historical sites that are worth visiting, including Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, which were given World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 1983. There are also plenty of museums and art galleries worth paying a visit to, including the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, an impressive national art collection; the Museu da Electricidade (Electricity Museum); the Museu da Água (Water Museum); the Museu do Azulejo, one of the most important national museums; the Museu da Marinha, a fascinating maritime museum; and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento (Pavilion of Knowledge), an interactive science and technology museum. Plus, you may want to check out the beautiful parks and gardens, including the Jardim Zoológico; the Parque das Nações; the Oceanarium; Ajuda Botanical Gardens; and the Lisbon Botanical Gardens.

The city is welcoming of people whatever their sexuality and so you will find there are plenty of gay bars, clubs and saunas in the area. There are also a number of events, such as the Lisbon Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and the Lisbon LGBT Pride Parade, where members of the LGBT community can celebrate gay culture. Thus, with so many things to do and see in Lisbon, your holiday in the city is likely to be a busy one!
