Located off the coast of Valencia, Ibiza is the third largest of the Balearic Islands with a population of over 130,000 inhabitants. Ibiza Town is the largest city in Ibiza, with a population of almost 50,000, and serves as capital of the island. Although the Spanish Tourist Office has been attempting to encourage families to visit the island with the promise of family-friendly activities, the island is particularly famous for its summer club scene. Many people are attracted to Ibiza because of the nightlife and dance music. There are certainly a large number of clubs in the area, though there is also a more traditional side to Ibiza which can be enjoyed.
There is plenty of beautiful scenery to explore during your stay, including stunning beaches which you can walk along or lie back and get a tan on. You might like to take a dip in the water or try parasailing. You can also hire a boat and visit the mythical island rock of Es Vedra or nearby Formentera. There are also natural caves to discover on the island, including the largest, the Cova de Can Marçà in Puerto de San Miguel. You may want to explore the old part of Ibiza Town where you see sights that include the Castle of Ibiza which was built in the fourteenth century and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.
You could decide to take a trip through the Ibiza countryside or explore the wharf side festival. If you’re interested in exploring the gay nightlife on the island, Calle de la Virgen is the best place to be, as this is where most of the gay bars, nightclubs and other establishments can be found. Plus, there is a gay beach located a few kilometres outside of Ibiza Town, known as Playa Es Cavallet, where nude sunbathing is common. Ibiza also has its own gay pride event which takes place in June and features a parade, as well as the usual festivities. Overall, Ibiza has a laid-back atmosphere and plenty of activities to do and sights to see.
