Hamburg is officially known as the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, a name which reflects Hamburg’s significant historical role on the world stage as one of the biggest port cities in Europe. Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany with a population of over 1.8 million people and has a reputation of being an international city that attracts visitors from all over the world. If you choose to pay a visit to Hamburg, you will not be disappointed as there is a wide array of attractions, events and sights to see.
If you’re looking for gay bars and clubs to frequent, you may want to venture into the St. Georg area of the city or to Reeperbahm, which can be found in the St. Pauli district. This is the city’s red-light district and there are plenty of strip clubs, sex shops and brothels located there, as well as a sex museum. There is also a musical theatre and numerous restaurants, night clubs, bars and other similar establishments. Hamburg also plays host to a number of events, including Hamburg Pride, which is held in July in order to bring together the gay community in celebration of LGBT culture. The annual Erotic Christmas Market is also a popular draw in Hamburg.
Hamburg’s size and historical importance means that there is something for everyone on a trip to the city. You could visit one of the world’s largest graveyards, the Ohlsdorfer Friedhof, or go to the Hamburg Stadtpark where you will find a planetarium, or visit the city’s zoo; the Hagenbecks Tierpark. There are many museums throughout the city that include the Hamburg Museum, where you can learn more about the city; the International Maritime Museum, where you can look at model ships, uniforms and photographs; and Spicey's Gewürzmuseum, a spice museum that is purportedly the only one in the world!
You could always go on a boat trip, attend the theatre and enjoy events such as the Harbour Birthday held in May, the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival and The Hamburger Fair, which is one of the largest fairs in Germany. Hamburg is definitely a fascinating city that is well worth a visit.
