Guadalajara is the second largest city in Mexico and serves as capital of the Jalisco region of the country. If you’re interested in culture, Guadalajara is the ideal city to visit, being home to Mariachi music and hosting a number of major cultural events, including the Guadalajara International Book Fair and the International Film Festival of Guadalajara. There are also numerous sights to see, such as the Guadalajara Cathedral, and things to do from exploring the city to watching a bullfight. You can sample Mexican cuisine, drink and socialise in the many restaurants, bars and clubs in the area. With its youthful population, Guadalajara is a vibrant city with a welcoming atmosphere.
If you decide to explore the city, it is worth taking a trip to Guadalajara Cathedral, which dates back to the sixteenth century and features the mural of ‘The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin’. To the rear of the cathedral is the Plaza de la Liberación, which features two large fountains and a sculpture of Miguel Hidalgo, who signed the Mexican Declaration of Independence. As an atrium for the oldest theatre in the city, you will find that many free concerts are held there. The Rotonda de los Jalicienses Ilustres is a mausoleum for important individuals born in Jalisco, whilst the Palacio de Gobierno is a building popular with tourists largely due to its murals which were painted by José Clemente Orozco.
If you want to know more about the history of the city, the Museo Regional de Guadalajara is well worth a visit, as is the Instituto Cultutal Cabañas, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. There are also popular cultural events held in the area, including the International Book Fair. Besides the culture of the city, you can also enjoy the nightlife that is on offer. The Prisciliano Sanchez St. & Chapultepec areas of the city, also referred to as the Zona Rosa, are particularly gay-friendly and so you will find a multitude of gay bars and other establishments where you can relax and be yourself. Thus, you will find everything you could possibly need to keep you entertained in Guadalajara!
