Granada has a population of over 237,000 inhabitants and is 738 metres above sea level, being situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the autonomous region of Andalusia. The city is a popular destination amongst tourists, who are attracted to the area because of its natural beauty, pleasant weather, and cultural institutions, artefacts and architecture. Granada is a good place to go if you want to discover more about the Moorish influence on the city’s identity with the Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace, proving to be especially popular with tourists. The city is also home to thousands of students who attend the prestigious University of Granada, thus contributing to the diversity of the area.
There are many museums, buildings and other notable landmarks in Granada. Some of the most popular include the Cathedral of Granada; the Royal Chapel; the Madraza Palace; the Plaza Nueva, the city’s oldest square; the Museo San Juan de Dios, which features a religious art collection; and the Alhambra, a medieval complex which was the last Moorish stronghold in Europe which features a fortress, palace, garden and government building. You can also visit the Mosque of Granada; the Cartuja Monastery; the Santo Domingo Church; the Federico García Lorca Museum and the Science Park.
There is also some incredible scenery to appreciate in the city, such as the Carmen de los Mártires, which are stunning gardens that date back to the 19th century; the Rio Genil, where there is a tree-lined promenade and beautiful gardens; the Triunfo Gardens, which contain a large fountain and monument of the Virgin Mary; and the San Nicolas Viewpoint. Thus, there are plenty of places to visit. Plus, there are lots of bars, clubs and restaurants in the city, some of which attract a gay crowd, so that not only will you get your fill of high culture during your stay; there is also the opportunity to socialise and have fun with friends.
