Canberra Gay Guide / LGBT Guide
Canberra has a population of 367,000, making it Australia’s eighth largest city. It was designated as Australia’s capital in 1908 following years of rivalry between the two largest Australian cities, Sydney and Melbourne, and construction began in 1913. Canberra is located in the Australian Capital Territory, which is an enclave within New South Wales. Being independent of any state means no one state gains a power advantage. There are plenty of national monuments, museums, and other cultural institutions that are worth paying a visit to, as well as Parliament House and other government buildings in the city. If you prefer the great outdoors, you can enjoy exploring the many parks and nature reserves that Canberra has to offer.
There are numerous museums and buildings of historical significance throughout the city, including the Australian War Memorial, which also serves as one of Australia’s most impressive museums; the Canberra Museum and Gallery; the National Capital Exhibition; the National Film & Sound Archive; the National Museum of Australia; the High Court of Australia; the National Gallery of Australia; the National Portrait Gallery; Old Parliament House, which features the Museum of Australian Democracy; Parliament House of Australia; Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre; and the Royal Australian Mint, where you can see how coins are made.
There are also notable events held during the year, such as: Floriade, a festival of flowers; Summernats, a festival of modified cars; The Multicultural Festival, a celebration of the diverse nature of the city; The National Folk Festival, where you can listen to folk music and watch folk dancers; and the Canberra Show, where there are agricultural competitions, shows, and amusement park rides to enjoy.
You will also find plenty of opportunities to get active during a stay in Canberra, as you can explore the city’s mountain-bike trails; walk or skate around Lake Burley Griffin; or hire a boat, canoe or kayak and have fun in the lake itself.
Wherever your interests lie, you should find that Canberra has something for you, whether you want to get active and enjoy the sunshine; learn more about Canberra’s past; or enjoy shopping, eating, drinking and socialising at night, as it is all there.
