Auckland, which is known as Tamaki Makaurau in Maori, is the largest and most populous area of New Zealand with a population of over 1.4 million inhabitants. It is found in the North Island and is recognised as one of the most liveable cities in the world. The city falls within a temperate climate zone, meaning it does not experience extreme highs or lows, making it a good place to visit at any time of year. There are plenty of beaches, harbours, islands and hiking trails to explore and so it is the ideal place to visit if you want to keep active. Plus, there are also plenty of museums where you can learn more about Auckland’s culture and heritage.
Some popular cultural establishments include the Auckland War Memorial Museum; the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki; the New Zealand National Maritime Museum; the Museum of Transport and Technology; and the Stardome Observatory, which also contains Maori archaeological sites. You could also pay a visit to Kelly Tarlton's, which is an aquarium, and Auckland Zoo, as well as Sky Tower, which is the tallest free-standing tower in the Southern Hemisphere, and Titirangi which is an artistic area of the city where numerous art galleries and cafés are located.
You may prefer to do something more active and in Auckland you will find yourself spoiled for choice, as you can explore the Waitakere Ranges, which are a chain of hills; follow a bush walk track in Huia, a regional park; walk along one of the city’s many volcanic cones such as One Tree Hill; climb the Auckland Harbour Bridge; rent a bicycle to explore Tamaki Drive and other areas; or try kayaking and other water sports. You may decide to go shopping or relax at the beach, as well. Plus, there are numerous gay-friendly establishments and the annual Auckland Pride Festival and Outtakes Gay Film Festival to enjoy. Thus, you are unlikely to run out of things to see and do during a trip to Auckland.
