With a population of over 500,000 inhabitants, Antwerp is located on the eastern bank of the river Scheldt in the Flemish region of Belgium. The city has one of the largest seaports in Europe and due to its location has long played an important role in Belgium’s economy and cultural identity; although it has never really reclaimed the same level of prestige it had prior to the Spanish Fury in the 16th century. Since the city has such a long and rich history, this is reflected in the architecture and landmarks in the area. There are also notable museums and art galleries where you can learn more about what makes Antwerp unique.
With so much to see and do, it can be difficult to know where to start, but there are a number of places that are particularly worth visiting during your stay. These include the Plantin Moretus Museum, a museum dedicated to the history of printing; Het Steen, a small medieval castle which can be found along the river Scheldt; the Antwerp Ruien, giving you an opportunity to explore the underground city; the Fotography Museum; the Fine Arts Museum; and the Palace of Justice. There are also some beautiful buildings in the area, including churches such as the Cathedral of Our Lady; Saint Paul's Church; and the Carolus Borromeus Church.
Other popular tourist areas include Old Market Square, which is surrounded by medieval guild houses; Central Station, where you don’t have to even catch a train to be able to appreciate the impressive building; and Boerentoren (Farmers' tower), one of the oldest skyscrapers in Europe. You can also sample the city’s culture through its food and drink, which you will find in abundance in the many cafés and restaurants in the area. The city also has a gay-friendly vibe with plenty of gay bars and clubs where you can drink and socialise, as well as events such as Belgian Leather Pride and Antwerp Pride taking place annually. Antwerp is therefore definitely worth a visit.
