With a population of over 908,000 inhabitants, Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the most populated island of Spain. Tourism is crucial to the island’s economy and with approximately five million tourists visiting the island every year; it is evident that there are enough sights to see and activities to do in the area to keep people coming back. Tenerife is famous for hosting one of the world’s largest carnivals, the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with Santa Cruz serving as the island’s capital since 1833. It is also home to the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which is a World Heritage Site. A stay in Tenerife can be as relaxing or as action-packed as you want it to be.
If you’re interested in architecture, it is well worth seeing the Auditorio de Tenerife, an impressive modern building that was completed in 2003 and is located in the island’s capital. If you want to enjoy Tenerife’s natural beauty, you will certainly appreciate the beauty of Mount Teide, an active volcano which is the third highest in the world, and the surrounding Teide National Park, which was first designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The Parque Rural de Anaga is also a popular place to visit, because of the scenery, particularly amongst hikers. The Loro Parque Zoo, a large animal park, is another well-known tourist attraction.
Tenerife is the ideal island to visit if you want to keep active, as there are plenty of water sports to choose from and so you could always try swimming, surfing, sailing and speed boating, whilst scuba divers flock to Tenerife because of the environment and excellent opportunities for diving all-year-round. You could always explore on foot, walking through the towns or in the hills, or rent a bike and try mountain biking or road cycling. In terms of Tenerife’s nightlife, the gay scene isn’t quite as large as that of Gran Canaria, but it has been growing in size and so you will find numerous gay clubs and bars on the island. All in all, Tenerife is the perfect holiday destination.
