With a population of over 350,000 New Orleans is the most populous city in the state of Louisiana. Sometimes referred to as ‘The Big Easy,’ the city has a distinct and unique identity, with its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. It is most famous for being the birthplace of jazz music and for its cuisine, as well as its annual festivals such as Mardi Gras. It’s a lively city with friendly people and history is all around you, wherever you go, from the architecture and cemeteries to the museums and art galleries. You can explore the city and take in the beauty during the day and make the most of the city’s many clubs and bars at night, ensuring there is never a dull moment.
To start with, you may decide to go for a stroll through some of the historic neighbourhoods such as the French Quarter; Faubourg Tremé; Esplanade Ridge; Uptown; and Algiers Point, amongst others, so that you can take in the stunning architecture and get a feel for the area. The French Quarter is also home to the city’s LGBT community and thus you will find numerous gay-run establishments, including the oldest continuously running gay bar in the US, Cafe Lafitte in Exile. This is also the location of the Southern Decadence event that is held over six days and features street and dance parties that are sexual in tone. New Orleans Pride is held every June.
There are also many museums and other institutions of cultural significance in the city, such as the National World War II Museum; the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art; the Cabildo and Presbytere history museums; and the Contemporary Arts Center. Plus, in a city famous for its music you will also find notable festivals held throughout the year, such as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival; the New Orleans' Voodoo Experience; and the Essence Music Festival.
