I have just returned from San Francisco. I stayed at the Parker Guest House, and I cannot recommend it too highly. Bill and Bob and their staff(cute boys!) were always helpful and welcoming - nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was lovely, and there was complimentary wine between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. PGH is very handy for Castro and streetcars to Fisherman's Wharf and other attractions. Check out their website before visiting SF, a great city!

Been to San Francisco lots of times but on my last visit(Nov 2005) I found the scene quite staid. The bars around the Castro were much the same as when I first went there in 1978, though my favourite -The Badlands had changed and is now a video dance bar! Quite a transformation from the cruisy bar it once was. All of the bath houses (saunas) have now gone -only one left on Market Street, and my friends in Oakland told us that most of the leather bars in the Folsom area have now gone. Apart from the gay scene it is a beautifull city with a marvellous transport system, yes a car is a liability there, and it still gives me a buzz just walking around Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. If you're going to visit Alcatraz buy your tickets online before you go as there's usually a two or three day wait. Lots to see and do on the cultural side too, it's a must for everyone.

Last year I was in San Francisco for the Pride Festival. Wow! What a gay gay, in fact weekend! Every year at the beginning of June, 500 rainbow flags are hoisted the length of Market Street and San Francisco explodes with queerness. For a city known as the “Gay Mecca” for the other eleven months of the year, June is Queer Heaven. Everything reaches a crescendo the last weekend of June. I was awoken on the Saturday by the roar of 500 motorcycles heralds the start of the Pride Parade, a dazzling cavalcade of diversity. The streets are lined 12 deep as 750,000 people cheer the contingents on. Going on during and after the parade is the second day of the Celebration at Civic Center. Fifteen stages – simultaneously – entertain the crowds with world famous acts. If you are going to San Francisco and like to party, then go for the Pride weekend, you will not be disappointed.
