With a population of about 2.2 million, Brisbane is the most populous city in Queensland and serves as the state’s capital. Brisbane is situated along Brisbane River, which was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, who had been the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. It was only after Queensland became a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859 that Brisbane was nominated as capital. The city is popular amongst tourists for its warm climate, stunning scenery and welcoming locals. There is much to do and see in this forward-thinking, laid-back city, thus making it the destination of choice for many.

There are numerous landmarks and cultural institutions dotted around the city. You might want to pay a visit to Brisbane City Hall and King George Square; the Commissariat Store, one of the city’s oldest buildings; the Museum of Brisbane; Queensland Cultural Centre; Parliament House and Old Government House, historical buildings which date back to the 1860s; the Maritime Museum; Manly Boat Harbour; and the Wheel of Brisbane, a Ferris wheel which is situated along the South Bank and enables you to appreciate an amazing view of the city.

You may also choose to explore the City Botanic Gardens; Alma Park Zoo; the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary; Mount Coot-tha, which is Brisbane’s tallest mountain; New Farm Park; and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. There are also plenty of activities to do, such as kayaking; abseiling; rollerblading; and cycling, as well as cultural events to enjoy, such as the Royal Queensland Show, also referred to as the Ekka; the Greek Paniyiri Festival; and the St. George Brisbane International Film Festival.

Brisbane nightlife is also impressive and you will find that Fortitude Valley has lots of nightclubs and bars that cater for the gay clientele, thus giving you an opportunity to socialise with other men. The city also has its own gay pride event – the Brisbane Pride Festival – which was first held in 1990. Overall, then, there is plenty to keep you occupied during a stay in Brisbane.
