With a population of over 25,000 people, Biarritz is a popular seaside town that can be found along the Bay of Biscay in south-western France. Biarritz was once the holiday destination of choice for European royals, including Queen Victoria and Alfonso XIII of Spain. These days it is the casinos, clubs, beaches and other attractions that keep ordinary people coming to the area. The town is largely pedestrianised and so easy to get around whether you want to explore the area or just go shopping. You will find there are plenty of activities to keep you busy and sights to see during a stay in Biarritz.
There are a number of museums worth visiting in the area, including the Asiatica Museum, where you can examine a collection of Asian art; the Museum of the Sea, which houses a number of aquariums; the Museum of Chocolate, where you can learn more about how chocolate is made. The town also contains buildings of architectural and historical significance, such as St-Martin's Church that was first constructed in the twelfth century and restored in the sixteenth century; the Russian Orthodox Church which has a distinctive blue dome; as well as the Chapelle Imperiale, which was built specifically for Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, who also ordered the construction of a palace on the beach, which is now known as the Hôtel du Palais.
In Biarritz you can go for a walk along the beach, swim and enjoy the water sports. Surfing is particularly popular and, in fact, the town is home to the annual Biarritz Surf Festival that was first held in 1993. There are two large casinos in the area, with the Barrière and the Bellevue both attracting a substantial number of visitors. If you’re interested in the nightlife of the town, there are also numerous bars, clubs and restaurants where you can drink, eat and socialise. Biarritz is a welcoming town and has plenty of things to do and see, making it well worth the journey.
