With a population of 268,700 inhabitants, Bergen is the second largest city in Norway and acts as a gateway to the fjords of West Norway. The city is well-known for its mountainous terrain and is encircled by the Seven Mountains. It is this distinctive feature which gave the city its name, since ‘berg’ is the Norse word for mountain. Bergen has an important cultural significance in Norway, being home to the Bergen International festival and Bergenfest and one of the oldest orchestral institutions, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. There are also lots of museums and art galleries in the city, as well as impressive architecture.

You can also enjoy concerts and stage performances, including at the Bergen Jazzforum, where you can listen to jazz music; Garage, where you listen to rock music and if you’re interested in classical music you should really experience the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. If drama is your passion Den Nationale Scene is a popular theatre that stages traditional and modern plays.
The city is also worth exploring for its beaches, parks and buildings, and there are plenty of opportunities to walk, cycle, swim and fish. Of course, the city also has plenty of bars and clubs if you’re interested in sampling Bergen’s nightlife.
