With a population of over 3.7 million, Athens is the largest city in Greece and serves as the nation’s capital. Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world and is largely regarded as the birthplace of democracy, meaning you will find plenty of historical sites and places of interest to visit. Indeed, the city is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery, as well as plenty of landmarks that date back to the modern era, such as the Hellenic Parliament. Plus, the city is home to numerous museums and art galleries, theatres, parks and has stunning scenery.
It is well worth taking a stroll around the city and seeing the many landmarks of Athens, including the Acropolis, an ancient fortified town that dates back to the Bronze Age; the Ancient Agora where you can find the Temple of Hephaestus and the museum of the agora; Syntagma Square, where you can see the Parliament building and watch the changing of the guards that takes place every hour; Kerameikos, the site of an ancient cemetery; the Temple of Olympian Zeus; Panathinaiko Stadium, where the first modern day Olympics was staged in 1896; and Lycabettus Hill, where you get an amazing view of Athens.
You might decide to visit some of the museums and galleries in the city, such as the National Archeological Museum; the New Acropolis Museum; the Benaki and Museum of Cycladic Art; the National Art Gallery; and the City of Athens Technopolis. There are also parks worth exploring including Parnitha National Park and the National Garden of Athens. You can also enjoy eating and drinking in the many restaurants, cafés, bars and nightclubs in the city.
If you’re particularly interested in exploring the gay nightlife, Gazi is the area in Athens you want to visit, as this is the city’s gay village. There are also a number of gay-oriented events held in the city, including Athens Pride, where members of the LGBT community celebrate their contribution to society, and OUTVIEW film festival, which showcases gay cinema. Thus, Athens gives you the perfect mixture of culture and fun and is a city well worth visiting.
